C'mon, You Have to Do Better Than That (The Disaffected Lib) | Progressive Bloggers

What's in a name?   Iran has just unveiled its latest surface-to-surface missile.  It's been given the unfortunate name, Qiyam which, in English, means "Resurrection."  Can we quit with the Apocalyptic names, please?   Just give it a rest. And from the "Yeah and if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle" file, two stories.  Outgoing US Defense Secretary Robert Gates warns that Hezbollah has a variety of rockets and missiles that could be used to deliver biological or chemical weaponry.  What does "could" mean anyway, other than anything you want it to mean but can't back up with a shred of evidence.  Not to be outdone, a senior official from the US National Intelligence Director's Office warns that North Korea could eventually develop a ballistic missile capable of reaching America."No one is looking at the North Koreans as building these systems to have a first-strike capability or anything like that. That's not what we're really…

Pakistan Said to be Gearing Up for Nuclear War (The Disaffected Lib) | Progressive Bloggers

The people who assess the risks of nuclear war spend a lot of time casting bones and reading entrails.   Right now they warn that Pakistan is seen readying to "cross the nuclear threshold."Pakistan's test launch last month of a new short-range ballistic missile, when added to its quickly growing arsenal of lower-power nuclear weapons, indicates the South Asian country is seriously readying to use its nuclear deterrent should war break out again with India, the Times of India reported on Sunday.Federation of American Scientists Nuclear Information Project Director Hans Kristensen said the nuclear-capable Hatf 9 missile appears to be designed to attack an invading force of Indian soldiers."While that wouldn't threaten Indian survival in itself, it would of course mean crossing the nuclear threshold early in a conflict, which is one of the particular concerns of a short-range nuclear weapon," Kristensen said.Concerns about the security of Pakistan's nuclear…

Doesn't Anyone Just Bomb Any More? The US Moves to Militarize Cyberspace (The Disaffected Lib) | Progressive Bloggers

America's military/industrial/civilian warfighting complex must be running out of countries to bang away on.  It's hard on a true warfare state when you run short of wars and begin suffering the pangs of acute Casus Belli Deficiency Syndrome (CBDS).  Just in the nick of time those enterprising war dogs at the Pentagon have found the solution - make up new "acts of war."According to The Guardian, the Pentagon is moving to make cyber-attacks an act of war.  You bring down America's computers, be prepared to get a giant missile up your ass.The US government is rewriting its military rule book to make cyber-attacks a possible act of war, giving commanders the option of launching retaliatory military strikes against hackers backed by hostile foreign powers. The Pentagon has concluded that the laws of armed conflict can be widened to embrace cyberwarfare in order to allow the US to respond with the use of force against aggressive assaults on its computer and IT…

The ever shrinking Liberal shadow (CalgaryGrit) | Progressive Bloggers

There's only so much you can read into the critic portfolios assigned to the third party in the house - especially when numbers dictate that everyone gets something. But the Liberal shadow cabinet deserves a bit of attention, if only because it marks Bob Rae's first significant public decision as interim leader.Among the notables:-Ralph Goodale is an obvious and deserving choice as Deputy Leader, given his experience and the need to grow the party west of Mississauga.-In Rae's most notable and encouraging move, Stephane Dion winds up with intergovernmental affairs and democratic reform. True, these are not high profile posts in the Harper government (quick quiz: name the intergovernmental affairs minister), but between the NDP's murky position on the Clarity Act and the number of Premiers jumping into the Senate reform frenzy, this is an important role, and one Dion is perfectly suited for.-On the leadership front, Dominic LeBlanc takes over from Rae as Foreign Affairs critic,…

ATV's on City's Streets Will Create Conflicts for Cyclists, Pedestrians (Sudbury Steve) | Progressive Bloggers

The following letter to the editor was submitted to the Sudbury Star for publication on Thursday, May 26, 2011. At the time of posting, the letter has not been published.-----ATV's on streets will create conflict for cyclistsLater this year, our municipal council will be considering the creation of a by-law which may permit all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s) on a significant number of our city’s streets. Council should carefully consider how this by-law will impact pedestrians and bicyclists before agreeing to allow ATV’s on our streets, and whether such a by-law is in keeping with building a healthy and sustainable community. As the price of gasoline continues to rise, we can expect more people to opt for alternative methods of transportation. Along with being environmentally sustainable, walking and cycling are healthy transportation choices for residents. For some residents, walking and cycling may be the only transportation option available, due to cost factors.Recently,…

On the Quebec question: (3) Nationhood (To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth) | Progressive Bloggers

Is Quebec a nation? Is Canada a nation? Can there be a nation within another nation? These are difficult points, but some committment on these issues seems to underlie both proponents' and opponents' attitudes towards Quebec separation and nationalism. (See? It's even in that word: nationalism.)What is a nation, generally? This is a notoriously tricky question. One can't simply define "nation" in frankly legal terms -- so, "nation" equals "state" -- without just begging the question against Quebec nationalism (and Scottish nationalism and Basque nationalism and so on). While folks opposed to the idea might like that result, it's a pretty cheap move -- victory by fiat.A better way to go for those opposed to Quebec separation or nationalism would be to work with a better definition, and show that Canada satisfies it, while Quebec does not. Now, the most common ways of defining a nation appeal to things like a shared history, common language and defined borders. And that works well…

Stoking Fear (Rusty Idols) | Progressive Bloggers

Salon has an interesting piece about the strange obession of Matt Drudge of the Drudge Report with obsessively tracking down and hyping stories of violence between whites and blacks:In an era when urban white flight is reversing and violent crime is at record lows across the nation, this world of race riots and constant violent attacks on innocent Caucasians exists only in the imaginations of Matt Drudge and the paranoid suburban and exurban white people he wants to keep terrified. Stoking those racial fears goes beyond cynical political point-scoring. To devote so much energy to attempting to make whites terrified of blacks is just vile.Speaking of Christie Blatchford...Christie Blatchford's columns will soon be back in the pages of the National Post, parent company Postmedia news network announced on Wednesday.Veteran journalist Christie Blatchford is joining Postmedia News, which will see her columns return to the National Post. Soudas departing (Impolitical) | Progressive Bloggers

The Globe headline this aft as news comes that one of Harper's most committed partisans is leaving: "Harper loyalist Dimitri Soudas stepping down as PMO spokesman." Termed a loyalist in a headline of the national paper. It sounds quite honourable at a glance. Marjory LeBreton is consulted: Senator Marjory LeBreton said she will miss Mr. Soudas.“He's been an outstanding, hard-working colleague,” Ms. LeBreton said.“I have nothing but admiration for his hard work and devotion to the Prime Minister.” Further on, they do touch on some of the controversies involving Soudas' tenure such as ignoring some journalists, Soudas' involvement with the pre-determined journo question list, his "sway" in Quebec that was probably inordinate given his position as a young spokesperson. But it's done in a general way. Not mentioned in the Globe, however, that very recent and significant controversy involving allegations of interference by Soudas in the Montreal Port Authority's board. A…

Is Fracking In The UK Causing Earthquakes? (DeSmogBlog) | Progressive Bloggers

Fracking-illustration-001.jpg Hydraulic fracturing in areas of the United Kingdon has been halted due to concerns that the procedure is responsible for two small earthquakes triggered in the town of Lancashire. One earthquake occurred in April and measured a 2.3 on the Richter scale, and another occurred last week measuring 1.5 in magnitude. Both quakes happened at the same time and in the same location where the Cuadrilla Resources energy company was actively fracking gas wells. No significant damage was reported from either earthquake. The British Geological Survey suggests that the earthquakes are a result of fracking, as gas and oil drilling has been known to cause small earthquakes in other areas of the world. <!--break--> From a report in the UK’s The Independent: "It seems quite likely that they are related," said Brian Baptie of the British Geological Survey (BGS). But now it seems GM has forgotten its moral responsibility to Oshawa (and Canada). Harper says he saved GM to protect Canadian jobs -- he should be reminding GM and safeguarding Canadian jobs.

Don't mess with my vote, Jack (Bill Longstaff) | Progressive Bloggers

With 59 of their 103 seats in Quebec, we could expect the NDP to pay close attention to Quebec's concerns. That would, of course, be appropriate. But what I wouldn't have expected them to do is propose eroding the democratic rights of the rest of us in order to favour that province. This is what Jack Layton has proposed with his suggestion that the government give Quebec more seats in the House of Commons. With 24.4 per cent of the seats for 23.2 per cent of the Canadian population, Quebec is fairly represented in the House. Furthermore, its share of the population is decreasing.Democracy is nothing less than equal political power and one citizen/one vote is the embodiment of that principle. Now it appears Mr. Layton is willing to sacrifice my political equality for his political gain. First-past-the-post has already reduced the value of my vote to essentially zero in federal elections, and the only hope I have of giving it meaning is a system of proportional representation.…

The Supreme Court's Confusing Decision on Sexual Assault and Consent: R. v. J.A. (Wise Law Blog) | Progressive Bloggers

The Supreme Court's decision on sexual assault and consent in R. v. J.A. has been hot topic since its May 27, 2011 release. Complaints that the decision essentially criminalizes a wide range of innocent sexual activities are flourishing across Twitter (and the nation). The facts underlying the Court's ruling in J.A. are not disputed: a man and woman engaged in consensual sexual activity, which included the man choking the woman unconscious. While she was briefly unconscious, he inserted a sex toy into her anus - something she later admitted in testimony they had done before. after removing the toy, they had vaginal intercourse which she stated was consensual. She complained to the police some time later. (She later attempted to withdraw her complaint, stating that she had made it falsely as a result of a custody threat he had made regarding their son.) He was charged with sexual assault among other crimes and convicted. The Supreme Court's 6-3 majority decision, authored by…

Incoherance (Rusty Idols) | Progressive Bloggers

Former BC Liberal Party leader Gordon Gibson's column in the Mop and Pail today is an excellent example of the essential policy incoherence and inherent cognitive dissonance that are the core features of neo-liberalism's Canadian strain. He correctly identifies the essential problems of the Canadian Liberal Party; the impression that they stand for nothing and the generation of squabbling internecine battles and jockeying for power and influence that have hollowed the party out. He suggests they need to stand for something again, for policies that will make them stand out from the other parties.Where to find unique policies? The obvious places are the “third rails” of politics, the ones others fear to touch. These are things like our drug policy (insane), our prison policy (likewise), our immigration policy (revolutionizing Canada on an ongoing basis without debate), democratic reform, the importance of supporting Canadian culture, a leadership of ideas (not cash) in things…

New York Attorney General Sues Over Lack Of Fracking Studies (DeSmogBlog) | Progressive Bloggers

gavel.jpg Attorney General Eric Schneiderman of New York has filed a lawsuit against the federal government for failing to properly study the effects of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) before granting permits to gas drillers. The lawsuit seeks to stop fracking in the Delaware River Basin until a comprehensive analysis of the dangers is performed by the government. Schneiderman warned Washington last month that he would file suit if the government didn’t take immediate action to study the effects of fracking. Schneiderman says that federal officials have failed to assess the fracking process properly, and that the environmental protections for the Delaware River Basin have not been evaluated by government officials to determine if they are adequate to address the fracking boom. Independent studies have shown that fracking fluids contain numerous toxic chemicals, and that the potential to contaminate water supplies…

What's Fueling Skyrocketing Gas Prices? Ask Goldman Sachs (The Disaffected Lib) | Progressive Bloggers

I saw pump prices advertised at $131.9/litre yesterday.   Lately I've developed a game for these occasions.  When I see a gas price spike I try to match it to some supply catastrophe.  Is it the Mississippi refineries hit by recent flooding?   Could it be the civil war in Libya?  Perhaps it's just another manifestation of "peak oil."Maybe, maybe not.   Then again the real villain may not be Gaddafi but Goldman or one of the other Wall Street parasites who are making a killing gaming everything from oil to food staples and causing enormous suffering worldwide in their wake.Enter Wikileaks.   They've released a confidential State Department cable from 2008 that sheds a lot of light on what's going on.  From McClatchey Newspapers:When oil prices hit a record $147 a barrel in July 2008, the Bush administration leaned on Saudi Arabia to pump more crude in hopes that a flood of new crude would drive the price down. An Interesting Poll to Consider (The Happy Wanderer) | Progressive Bloggers

A new poll shows that a majority of Canadians don't really support Conservative policies. 53% said that they didn't want the Corporate taxes to drop and only 39% agreed. On the Fighter jets 52% disagreed with a purchase and 37% agreed. On the Long Gun registry the country is split on what to do, but currently it's 46%-43%in favor of keeping the registry.  So how did Harper get elected. Well he didn't really run on these policies in the first place, and guess what he only needed to get 40% to get his majority around where his policy approval is. Yet again a reason to reform the house. As it shows once again the only right wing party just needs to get the right wing vote to get a majority even though a majority didn't like the Conservative policies. Here is another interesting fact. A overwhelming majority support senate reform I wonder how much support house reform. The poll doesn't even mention abolishing the…

Tim Hudak vs. Full Day Kindergarten (The Liberal Scarf) | Progressive Bloggers

Today, Ontario is announcing the last stage of the rollout of full day kindergarten. In a highly competitive, globalized, knowledge-based economy it is absolutely essential that Ontario invest in the younger generation to ensure that we build a powerful workforce that can compete and win against the best anywhere on this planet, and investments in families like FDK go a long way to securing Ontario jobs and strengthening our economy. And up until last weekend, reckless rookie Tim Hudak wanted to scrap this program. But, in his slick, angry, and dark scheming unveiled over the weekend, Tim Hudak - just as he has on human rights, the HST, and creating Ontario jobs – has flip flopped. What once was a “frill”, he now says he’ll keep. Alberta ATV culture and kids (The Galloping Beaver) | Progressive Bloggers

I have my own gripe with Alberta and quadding culture, but that mostly has to do with not being able to paddle down a crystalline mountain river without meeting an ATV zipping in and out of the water every ten minutes. R. v. Eastgaard, 2011 ABCA 152 is a useful case in clarifying the need (or lack thereof) for extensive reasons following a short trial. Basically, the reasons have to be clear enough that the parties can understand what happened but they do not have to set out every issue in complete detail, especially if the information can be gleaned from the rest of the trial: [12] Reasons issued at the conclusion of, or very shortly after, relatively short trials need not precisely lay out every issue so long as a path to the result can be determined. That path can include argument, exchanges between counsel during argument, and observations made by the trial judge during argument and the trial.

The Tories' Bankrupt Brains (RedBedHead) | Progressive Bloggers

"I see, said the blind man to the deaf dog, who wasn't listening anyway" is a phrase that comes to mind reading reports of federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's press conference on the economy. It is a sign of just how ideologically blinded are the Tories that they will ride the

Harper's "Mission Completed" moment et al. ("News & Views" with Artem Medvedev for this week) (A Voice from Riverbend) | Progressive Bloggers

Blind perhaps, but no longer silent on Palin. (DAMMIT JANET!) | Progressive Bloggers

Three people who worked closely with Sarah Palin in her early political years have collaborated on a book that sets the record straight on Governor Quitter. Despite being filled with regret for his own actions while serving for nearly four years under candidate and then half-governor Sarah Palin, Frank Bailey came to fear that his former boss remained a voice in American politics. In Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin, former insider and my co-author Frank Bailey said of his ideals when we first met, “I am still a Fox News Conservative.” Frank went on to explain that Sarah Palin, despite her carefully managed image and “word salad” lip service to conservative ideals, cared little for the smaller government and social values that attracted him to her candidacy in 2005. She was (and he admits guilt in getting sucked in, and participating wholeheartedly) consumed not with governance, but with image, vindictiveness, and ultimately reaping worldly rewards. Majority of Canadians not buying Harper's majority (Let Freedom Rain) | Progressive Bloggers

Too bad in Canada the majority of Canadians don't count. There's something deeply wrong with our electoral system when a party can form a majority government - an irresponsible, spendthrift one at that - and wield power over a nation, introducing unpopular policies and a disastrous ideological bent to our courts. Too bad there's no real media representing the majority of  Canadians and no cohesive, effective opposition to wage the fight that needs to be fought. When Harper says he is "all about earning and maintaining the trust of Canadians", he is clearly lying.

The Liberals and the Centre (thwap's schoolyard) | Progressive Bloggers

I think it was in the Martin or the Dion years, when, on Canadian Cynic, I told Ti-Guy that I wanted the Liberal Party of Canada to die, because they deceived progressive-minded Canadians and made them believe that they could have their cake and eat it too.Ti-Guy replied something to the effect that by giving the centrist majority of Canadians a compromise between the extremist Conservatives and the loopy NDP. Without the Liberals, the majority of Liberal supporters would stupidly migrate over to the Conservatives (with whom they feel more comfortable). At the time, I wasn't sure that the thesis was worth the explosion in homelessness, in poverty, in the massive decline in our manufacturing sector, the occupation of Afghanistan and the subsequent war crimes, the increase in inequality, the creeping privatization of health care, the dallying with missile defence, and on and on and everything that Liberal governance represented. And what if it's the case that "centre cannot hold"? Crude price forecasts don’t support Dunderdale’s empire of debt #nlpoli (The Robert Bond Papers) | Progressive Bloggers

Crude oil prices are the pedestal on which Kathy Dunderdale’s empire of debt called Muskrat Falls is built. The provincial Conservative’s plan to burden the people of Newfoundland and Labrador with a huge public debt and grossly increased electricity prices – while shipping cheap power out of the province – is based on one simple premise. From the time Kathy Dunderdale first unveiled the scheme,  she keeps insisting that oil prices will skyrocket between now and 2017 when the project is supposed to start producing electricity.  Without Muskrat Falls, according to Dunderdale, people on the island of Newfoundland will be forced to pay ever higher amounts for electricity as oil climbs higher.  The culprit is the Bunker C fuel needed to make electricity as Holyrood. Oil is supposed to be more than $120 by 2017 and at $200 by 2020 in order to make the Conservatives’ Muskrat Falls scheme work.  That’s the only way that a $10 billion megaproject of…

Worst ever carbon emissions in 2010 (Impolitical) | Progressive Bloggers

Reported on Sunday in the Guardian: Greenhouse gas emissions increased by a record amount last year, to the highest carbon output in history, putting hopes of holding global warming to safe levels all but out of reach, according to unpublished estimates from the International Energy Agency. The shock rise means the goal of preventing a temperature rise of more than 2 degrees Celsius – which scientists say is the threshold for potentially "dangerous climate change" – is likely to be just "a nice Utopia", according to Fatih Birol, chief economist of the IEA. It also shows the most serious global recession for 80 years has had only a minimal effect on emissions, contrary to some predictions.Last year, a record 30.6 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide poured into the atmosphere, mainly from burning fossil fuel – a rise of 1.6Gt on 2009, according to estimates from the IEA regarded as the gold standard for emissions data.I did a quick search to see if Peter Kent, our Environment…

as parliament returns, let cats be cats and mice be mice (we move to canada) | Progressive Bloggers

Parliament resumes today, and with it, we step into a great unknown. Will Stephen Harper's Conservative majority plunge us into chaos? Will the government impose a neoliberal austerity agenda that shreds what's left of Canada's social programs? Will his social conservative base have free rein to chip away at our rights and freedoms? And if so, will the NDP opposition oppose him at every turn?Lying beneath these questions is a truth we cannot repeat often enough: the majority of Canadians did not vote for this government. A new Environics poll shows that the majority of Canadians oppose two central pieces of the Conservative plan: corporate tax cuts and the purchase of wasteful, unnecessary fighter jets. But the popular opposition goes much deeper than that.In the recent federal election, 5,832,401 million Canadians voted for the Conservative Party. In our ridiculous undemocratic, first-past-the-post system, this translated into 23 new Conservative seats in Parliament, but…

Harper Marginalizes Canada (Far and Wide) | Progressive Bloggers

Two separate articles in recent days that confirm Harper's failure on the Israel/Palestine question. What we have witnessed may win certain domestic friends, but the lack of sophistication, the tin ear when it comes to foreign policy nuance, has produced a truly unfortunate situation. A couple of days ago a Haaretz editorial supported the notion of Harper's irrelevance, with the general thesis being support from Harper was fine, but without Obama onside, Israel receives no practical benefit:It's nice that Netanyahu found a leader of an important Western country ready to support his pronouncements, after other leaders turned him down. But Netanyahu's lobbying only brought Israel the illusion of success. Obama didn't change his position and neither did the leaders of the European Union. Even after supposedly yielding to Netanyahu's demand, they still believe that Israel should retreat from the West Bank, evacuate the settlements and allow the Palestinians to set up an independent…

Paging John Baird (Peace, order and good government, eh?) | Progressive Bloggers

Abdelrazik can't get child benefits while on terror list The Quebec government has told a Montreal man that he cannot receive child-assistance benefits because his name appears on a United Nations terror watchlist. It's the latest in an ongoing saga for Abousfian Abdelrazik, who spent six years in forced exile in Sudan including time in prison where he says he was tortured. Despite being exonerated, he still finds himself on the UN Security Council's 1267 list -- which means Abdelrazik can't leave Canada and all of his financial assets remain frozen. It also means he can't have a bank account, can't work and can't benefit from government programs like child tax credits. As Abdelrazik himself points out, we're effectively penalizing his children for crimes he himself has never been convicted of committing. So why bring John Baird into it now? The letter advised him to get a certificate signed by the minister of foreign affairs stating he can collect child-care benefits. The…

Just Abolish The Senate Already (The Happy Wanderer) | Progressive Bloggers

Premier of Ontario said to just abolish the senate all together. There is really no use of the senate. We have a house that is actually elected and only need one elected house having two elected houses is silly. As it would allow for dead lock just like in the U.S were progress becomes to hard to do. We have one elected house and we should consider on reform it with proportional representation. The senate also favours the Atlantic and is unfair to the western provinces like Alberta and British Columbia. Why waste money on senators that are appointed by the PM almost making Canada not look like a democracy. With having a senate that kills bills that were passed in Parliament it doesn't truly show democracy. Canada needs to reform the house and eliminate the senate. I may be a Liberal, but I want fair representation for Alberta which is one of the least represented by the senate, and if eliminated Alberta will be more properly represented by the House of Commons.…

Plenty of room for Liberal Party (Mortons Musings) | Progressive Bloggers

Media and cocktail party chatter has recently suggested the natural configuration of a democratic nation is two parties -- one on the Right and the other the Left. By this logic there is little room for a party of the middle and so we Liberals ought to just fade away and divide up into Conservatives or NDPs. There's an advantage (obviously) for the Conservatives and NDPs to suggest this. And we do have to do some work (well, a lot of work) to keep relevant and be a viable government in waiting. But the idea that middle of the road parties are toast isn't borne out by international evidence. The USA does seem to have two polarised parties (and it does that country little good). But other countries (Great Britain seems an obvious example; but there are others in Europe) have several parties and middle of the road parties survive and prosper in all. Indeed, as I have argued elsewhere, the Conservative success has been achieved in part by moving to the middle.…

The Silver Lining to the Clouds of Disaster: Rebullding is Like Stimulus Money (Recreating Eden: Mary Soderstrom's Blog) | Progressive Bloggers

The New York Times reports on this probably up side of recent tornados and other disaster in the US this morning, "Reconstruciton Lifts Economy after Diaster." The story says: "There is no silver lining to a funnel cloud, as anyone who survived the tornadoes can attest, but reconstruction can help rebuild local economies as well as neighborhoods."A little less than 15 years ago, heavy rains and a burst dam led to severe flooding on the Saguenay River, north of the St. Lawence. I remember having supper with friends that July week where there was much tut-tutting about the damage. One guy, however, said, no, the aftermath was going to lift the area out of the slump it was in since reconstruction financed by insurance settlements and government rescue payments would pump in what amounted to "stimulus money." To my surprise, he turned out to be more correct than the doomsayers who said the disaster was the death knell for the towns. I needn't add that he was a Keynes…

Nepal census records third gender (Gay Persons Of Color: An Eye On The Gay Worlds Of Color) | Progressive Bloggers

In what is being hailed as a world first, the Central Bureau of Statistics of Nepal has given official recognition to its third gender or Meti citizens. This means that in the country of over 29 million, transgender human beings have been counted and documented, thereby validating their presence in Nepalese society. The move is a sign of the country's relatively swift progress on establishing equality for its entire population. Gay relationships in Nepal were decriminalized in 2007, and the government, which includes Sunil Babu Pant, the country's first openly gay lawmaker and founder of the LGBT rights organization Blue Diamond Society, continues to work on changing numerous discriminatory laws so that gender minorities can enjoy the same rights as others.

TransCanada says Their Eleventh Leak Proves Keystone is Safe (DeSmogBlog) | Progressive Bloggers

web-keystone_jp_1281063cl-3.jpg Today, TransCanada shut down its Keystone oil pipeline following its second pump station leak in less than a month. The most recent spill dumped nearly 1,600 litres of oil at a pumping station in Kansas over the weekend. With two spills in the last month, and ten more over the course of the last year, how can TransCanada convince U.S. authorities to trust the safety of its controversial expansion plans?   As DeSmogBlog recently reported, spills are far more common than industry would have us realize. A 2007 report by the Alberta Energy Utilities Board recorded a whopping 5,000 pipeline spills between 1990 and 2005 in Alberta alone.  The string of spills over the past year have only heightened public worries about the safety of North America’s ageing pipeline network, and provide evidence that the proposed Keystone XL and Northern Gateway lines…
