Steve's measured response kills
Stephen Harper has taken Canada down a dangerous path which can fairly be called a u-turn in our foreign policy. In his black and white world, our notional allies can do no wrong, which is why he continues to defend his characterization of Israel’s invasion and bombing of Lebanon as a “measured response” to what had been originally a small, contained, set of incidents.
Twenty-eight Israelis have been killed – including 16 civilians killed by rocket attacks – since the Israeli offensive against Hezbollah militants began last Wednesday.
More than 280 Lebanese – mostly civilians – have been killed in the conflict. [BBC News Dozens die in fresh Lebanon raids]
7 dead Canadians are among those civilians killed in Lebanon.
There is nothing at all measured about Israel’s attack on Lebanon which has, contrary to Geneva conventions, targetted civilians and civilian infrastructure ranging from civilian airports to milk factories.
A just Canada with a decent foreign policy would have deplored the actions of both sides of this conflict and done everything in its power to work with the parties and international community to achieve a ceasefire.
Instead, Harper has joined the Bush foreign policy team, without reservation.
Canadians didn’t vote for that.
Why are our Conservative MP’s not speaking up? Not all of them subscribe to the Bush-league foreign policy Harper has unilaterally forced upon Canada. There’s nothing more serious than war, and its the duty of all our members of parliament, not just the opposition, to speak out yet all we hear is… the sound of silence.
