Manitoba Premier objects to floor crossing

Manitoba premier Gary Doer has indicated that his government will introduce floor crossing prohibition legislation as part of a package of election reforms.

Even a Manitoba Tory publicly supports the ban. Justice critic Kelvin Goertzen says:

I do believe politicians aren’t free agents. When they’re elected to certain political parties, the people who elected them expect them to stay within that political party.

+1 Manitoba. 0 Harper-Emerson.

Floor Crossing Legislation

At least one party will be trying to get floor crossing prohibition legislation passed in this parliament. The NDP has already tabled a bill, and sometime after the break it’ll come up in parliament.

The difference now is you’ve got a public that is absolutely enraged at the David Emerson floor-crossing because it was just so cynical. NDP MP Peter Julian

I agree. The stage is set quite differently this time around. The single best thing the public can do is write all MP’s – particularly Liberal MPs and those Conservatives who voted for bill C-251 in the last parliament. Write also to newspapers and, when this issue turns up on talk-radio again, call in and voice your opinion. TheDemos.ca has a handy letter-writing tool which makes it easy to blast out a message to certain MP’s and media. Start writing now.
